I LOVE BOB

2/12/2013

This is a short video I filmed while Swiss Bobbing with my Dad and Sister in Park City, Utah. It was my first iPhone video as well as my first adventure sport video. While the jarringly–handheld look of it may be borderline sickening, it was necessary to be shot on the ever-available device. Getting to the next pitch on the sled was more important than getting a pretty shot. I hoped to capture the enthusiasm I have for the sport and that it makes people wanna check it out and see what the fuss is all about.

Swiss Bob is a relatively new sport to our area, and I can only describe it as sledding for adults. With lift tickets for skiing and snowboarding becoming rediculously over–priced in Park City, it's nice to have an alternative that’s free. For the cost of a sled (the Merikan Missile, on Amazon.com) we had countless number of days speeding down the slope without paying for anything else.

Steering is controlled primarily with your feet. The harder you dig into the snow with one heel, the more you turn in that direction. The sleds really work best on hard–packed snow, which makes hiking trails the perfect place. While there is an element of danger with the close proximity to trees, after my second time I never felt out of control. My favorite trail was a half an hour hike to the top, winding through aspens and pines all the way. This particular trail has seen an enormous increase in Swiss Bobbers in the past year. I'm excited to see this sport grow and spread across the country!
